Sailboat Racing at Stewartby

Try Sailboat racing at Stewartby, we have a development pathway for anyone who wants to try sailing, all the way into the formal racing scene in a family friendly environment. Sailboat racing at Stewartby has been a regular part of the Sailing scene since 1974.

As a club, we try to encourage all members into the racing as this is the best and quickest way to learn to sail on all points of sail. We as a club whole heartedly encourage recreational sailing for individuals and families alike. We have a small fleet of single and double handers that we encourage new members, and those who have recently completed RYA sailing courses, to use in their first year. This helps members to determine what sailboat they want to purchase to sail at their leisure, at the club.

We ask all sailors, whether they race or not, to complete a round of duty in the Safety Boat or committee boat, that way we all look after each others safety whilst members are out on the water. To this end the club encourages members to undertake some Safety Boat training, in the form of RYA PB2, or site specific Power Boat training.

We run courses for Race Officers and Assistant Race Officers (RO), as these duties, are a form of duty that does not require PB skills, but a good understanding of racing for the RO role, with little training to be an assistant to the RO.

We run a race in the summer for members new to the racing scene, it is the last race on a Sunday afternoon, with prizes for Gold or Silver fleet, Newbies to the club and age category prizes, from the youngest to the oldest.

Race training and coaching is supported by a once a month, "Development Saturday", part of our Social Saturdays, to encourage, help and coach new sailors into gaining the confidence to try racing at the club.

We also run informal racing on a Wednesday evening in the summer, which is a great way to get into the more formal racing on a Sunday, where many trophies and the Club Championship are competed for.

For more information on racing, talk to any committee member or email the race committee at: race-committee@swsc.org.uk
